NASABA Convention Update (July 10, 2007)
The NASABA Convention which took place this year in San Francisco made clear without a doubt that South Asians are a rising force in the legal profession. The approximate 400+ convention attendees ranged from all walks of the legal profession, including the public sector, large firms, small firms, and companies. The Convention featured an impressive array of speakers and luminaries, including among others, the first (potential) South Asian Article III Judge (Amul R. Thapar, currently the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky), Chief Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee (Preet Bharara) and the United States Attorney for the District of Minnesota (Rachel Paulose, the youngest ever United States Attorney). The convention featured a great mix of social events (an evening at the Asian Art Museum) and panels. SABAW had the largest NASABA contingent in SABAW's history - with nine attendees. Two SABAW Board Members were on panels and both gave impressive presentations. (Pallavi Mehta Wahi was on the Hot Topics in IP Law panel, and Shankar Narayan was on an Immigration Panel.)
